Thanksgiving Wines

Need wine ideas or pairings for Thanksgiving? Lenny Liebler, our in-house wine expert has some great suggestions for wine at a great price.

When suggesting wines for the Thanksgiving holiday there are two wines that are the most popular. The first wine is Riesling. Riesling is made at several levels of sweetness. One reason Riesling works so well is its acidity. Thanksgiving meals are typically heavier and salty. The acidity in Riesling will help to cut through the heavy flavors and compliment the meal. Also, Riesling has a wide variety of characteristics as far as aroma and taste profile. Some popular Rieslings for Thanksgiving are.

Ch St Michelle Riesling 6.99
Dr. Loosen Riesling 10.99
Schmitt Sohn Riesling 7.99

Another popular wine for the holidays is pinot noir. Once again the Thanksgiving meal is a heavy meal. The light body of pinot noir goes well to balance out the food typically served for Thanksgiving. Pinot noir, like Riesling, can have many different characteristics depending on where it is grown. Pinot noir tends to have aromas of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. This grape varies greatly among vintners but here are some suggestions that I find are pretty consistent and aren’t too expensive.

Prophecy pinot noir 9.99
Mark West pinot noir 9.69
Bogle pinot noir 9.49

There are several wines a person can suggest for a Thanksgiving meal. There is no real set in stone answer. Ultimately it is what wine you like to drink that is the best wine for your meal.
